NOW HIRING FOR 2025-26
As an editor at Cipher, you will work closely with 2–3 writers per issue, guiding them through the editorial process from initial idea to publication. This role requires strong communication skills, a keen editorial eye, and a commitment to fostering writers’ voices.
Your primary responsibility as an editor is to support your writers. While you should be particularly attuned to sentence-level errors like grammar and punctuation, you’ll also provide broader feedback on the style, tone, clarity, and relevance of each writer’s piece (“content editing”). Beyond providing feedback on their writing, you should also ensure your writers meet deadlines and understand the next steps in the publication process. As the publication date approaches, you will work alongside the Cipher staff to ensure each issue is as polished as possible. This includes meticulously reviewing articles for grammar, mechanics, spelling, word choice, factual accuracy, readability, and adherence to AP Style (with some stylistic exceptions). Before the issue goes to print, you’ll also help review the magazine’s layout to ensure each issue is visually clean and precise.
